Wireless Communication Device Policy in Schools

Date of Vote: February 19, 2025

Chamber of Origin: House

The proposed bill requires all school boards in Wisconsin to adopt a policy by July 1, 2026, that generally prohibits students from using wireless communication devices during instructional time. The definition of 'wireless communication device' includes cellular phones, tablets, laptops, and gaming devices. The policy must outline exceptions for emergencies, health management, individualized education programs, and teacher-authorized educational use. Additionally, school boards may include other exceptions deemed beneficial for student education or well-being. Violations of the policy may result in consequences such as confiscation of the device for the remainder of the school day.1
