SB443
Relaxing Requirements to Register to Vote
Date of Vote: May 31, 2023
Chamber of Origin: SenateThis bill revises provisions relating to voter registration. It requires the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in counties with a population of 100,000 or more (Clark and Washoe counties) to have extended hours of operation during certain periods before and after elections to allow people to apply for or renew driver's licenses and identification cards without requiring an appointment. The bill also makes an appropriation to the DMV for additional security costs related to the extended hours. The key changes include: - Allowing voters to register to vote in person during early voting or on election day by providing a current and valid driver's license, identification card, or tribal ID as proof of identity and residency, with some exceptions where a provisional ballot can be cast. - Requiring the DMV in larger counties to be open on weekends and extended hours during the 2 weeks before the voter registration deadline and 6 days after elections, solely for issuing or renewing licenses and IDs. - Prohibiting the DMV in larger counties from requiring appointments during those same periods. - Appropriating $15,449 from the State Highway Fund to the DMV for additional security costs related to the extended hours.1
