Prohibiting the "Gay/Trans Panic Defense"

House Bill 4718 would amend the Code of Criminal Procedure to prohibit the “gay/trans panic” defense in Michigan. This defense is often used when a gay or transgender person makes an unwanted sexual advance on a person. Currently when this defense is used in Michigan court, the charges can be reduced from murder to manslaughter.1
